Smiling Whales quilt
This quilt started with a query from my gorgeous son “Mum can you make a quilt for my film and tv project”. Ok I can manage that I replied, when does it need to be finished was the following question “Oh in about 3 weeks”!!!!!!
I had bought the fabulous Hearty Good Wishes fabric by Janet Clare for Moda and some Indigo by Moda and thought these 2 fabric ranges would work great together. Pre cuts were essential as time was limited (a bit of an understatement) and so the ideas started to form. I realised in making this quilt, and you will see in the video that I work instinctively, starting with the fabric first and then letting it tell me what it wants to become.
I just love the smiling whales in this fabric and wanted to showcase them in some way, so I enlarged some of the whales and used machine appliqué to stitch them into the border areas. I then straight line quilted the pieced areas and hand quilted around the appliquéd areas.
The combination of the flat straight line quilting, gives a wonderful flat, modern feel to the quilt while the hand quilting, a meditative process in itself, adds some ‘life’ and ‘fun’ to the quilt – not too serious!
I hope you enjoy the video made by my son and the music is by my songwriter/singer niece Amy Firth. Pop on over to her site http://www.amyfirth.com to hear more of her beautiful heart felt music.
The video shows how I work, at night, in the heat of summer. No makeup or hairstyling was harmed in the making of this video!!!!!!
